AS LITERATURE - HOMEWORK FEEDBACK ON EPIPHANY

Here are some further feedback comments on your homework on Epiphany.

There are two marks on each piece of work. Both marks are out of 5. The first mark refers to content of the paragraph and the second refers to expression. I will be marking to the assessment objectives later this term.

The best pieces of work used a formal academic register, used a topic sentence - that is a sentence that asserts an argument about the poem, referred to poetic terminology, commented on the impact of a quotation on a reader, wrote focused and quite specific points, did not try and cram every thing they know about the poem into the paragraph and kept description only for introducing a quotation.

  • Always write homework on A4 paper and always write on paper with a wide margin.

  • When analysing a quotation you must make comments about the quotation. For example what do particular words and phrases actually mean, what associations do they create and identify phonetic patterns and or imagery.

  • Always relate to the impact of a quotation has on an imagined reader - refer to poetic techniques when you do this.

  • Be concise. Avoid repetition of ideas, descriptions or irrelevant statements that do not address the task actually set.

  • Avoid description or summarising the action of a poem.

  • Be very focused. The aim of your paragraph is to explore one straight forward idea in each paragraph. Don't try and cram too much in. Don't keep writing things after you have completed your task.

  • You should plan out each paragraph before you write it.
