A COMPARATIVE PARAGRAPH

TASK

Using the poem Blackberry Picking by Heaney and You’re by Plath write a paragraph showing how their poetry is disturbing and shocking.

TEMPLATE PARAGRAPH

Topic sentence
Make a point that will summarise the features of both poets
Expand and focus on one poem
Focus on one poem and make a specific statement about the poem you are going to examine
Introduce quotation
Introduce the quotation by putting it in context. For example where in the poem does the quotation come from? And what is happening in the poem.
Quotation
The quotation should be short and you should be able to write a lot about it.
Comment
Identify a relevant feature of language that supports the point you want to make. Use relevant terminology.
Effect
Comment on the effect on a reader.
Bridge statement
Make a statement that compares or contrasts the first poem with the second. For example write, “This is different from…” or “This is similar to…”
