READING CHECKLIST
Whenever we read an article from Cupcakes and Kalashnikovs we read as students not consumers. As you read you need to have a pencil in one hand and expect
· to underline at least one important factual point in each paragraph
· and in the margin or on a separate sheet note down a summary of this point in your own words – use synonyms
· underline and jot down in your own words the writer’s opinions or emotional response to the subject of the article
· underline and jot down in your own words different opinions or emotional responses expressed about the topic of the article
· as you read - note who the audience is, the different purposes and what are the features of the genre expressed
· Consider the possible recasting tasks that could be asked about this article
· what are the language choices the writer has made to communicate these ideas of audience, purpose and genre
