AS LL - FEEDBACK FROM PRODUCTION TASK

AS ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
INTEGRATED ANALYSIS AND TEXT PRODUCTION
DIALOGUE HOMEWORK – FEEDBACK

Task Question

Imagine that Mitch returns home and talks with his mother before or after the events of Scene 6, (where he and Blanche reveal their feelings to one another). Write the dialogue between Mitch and his mother, in which Mitch tells his mother about Blanche.

Give careful consideration to your language choices, form and style, in order to convey a sense of Mitch’s voice. You should use dramatic dialogue form.

·         Generally these were good production tasks. Many of you embedded relevant details from the play. And this is the most important factor for this question.

·         And some of you really were able to establish genuine voices for these characters. Be careful not to spend too much time establishing a voice – it’s not a top priority.

·         Mother should ask very few questions. However they should be short, open trigger questions that allow Mitch to dominate the dialogue. He should do over 80% of talking

·         Try and be concise and short in establishing context. Important to get to the relevant core topics of the dialogue. Avoid spending too much time trying to establish context. Avoid too many details.

·         Mother’s function in the text is to enable Mitch to talk about Blanche and reveal his thoughts and feelings about her. Don’t treat her as if she is a full character. Avoid details.

·         Avoid irrelevant statements from Mother. Everything she says must add to our understanding of Mitch/ Blanche.

·         Avoid long stage directions

·         A reason for Blanche coming to Elysian Fields could be she says she is looking after Stella while she is pregnant. This news is revealed in scene 2

·         Axis of your dialogue needs to be towards Blanche and Mitch

·         Use capital letters for “English”

·         Avoid abbreviations use “two”  instead of “2”  and, “and”  instead of “&” etc

·         I felt that some of the texts were on the short side and some did not get beyond establishing context. It is vital to work quickly and under timed conditions. Remember there is
