IB YR 2 ENGLISH STREETCAR - CONFLICT

IB ENGLISH YEAR TWO
GENRE
STREETCAR - DRAMATIC CONTRASTS

TASK

Fold a piece of file paper in two. One column should be labelled Blanche and the other column should be labelled Stanley.

Identify the contrasts between these two characters.

  • You should consider what they say and how they speak

  • The objects that are associated with each character

  • What props or other dramatic devices are used to present these oppositions

  • Note the clothes Stanley and Blanche wear and are associated with

  • The ideas or concepts associated with each of them

  • Consider the stage directions - especially the SD's that introduce the two characters

  • Consider other stage directions that link to behaviour, actions, gestures, etc

  • What settings do we associate with each character

  • An obvious point of contrast exists in gender. Consider such things as social status and expectations, conventional gender roles and how do these compare with what we encounter in the play itself.

  • What background and ethnicity does each character have? In what ways do these contribute to conflict and opposition

TASK

"The dynamic power of a play lies in its conflict." Explore this idea in relation to a play you have studied.
