ISOLATION / DEATH OF A NATURALIST – SOME OBSERVATIONS
If you are writing about isolation and Death of a Naturalist I suggest you take the following points into consideration
· The young Seamus Heaney is part of a community. He is part of a family and he goes to school. Evidence for this can be found in the second half of the first stanza.
· However Heaney enjoys playing alone. He has a powerful and rich imagination and can create absorbing games by himself.
· He does not appear to be lonely. He may play alone because he lives on a farm – perhaps some distance from next door neighbours.
· The episode in the second stanza records a game. What makes the game so exciting is fear. However Heaney’s imagination is so strong and vivid that he has frightened himself. So much so he believes that the frogspawn will take revenge against Heaney for collecting so much frogspawn and therefore killing thousands of frogs.
If you are writing about isolation and Death of a Naturalist I expect you will refer to ideas in the bullet points above as well as others.
