Labov's Narrative Structure

The abstract - which signals that a story is about to be told

The orientation - which provides a focus by dealing with the who, what, when and where of the story

The complication - which is the basic narrative that develops the story

The resolution - which draws events to a conclusion and tells the listener what finally happened

The evaluation - which makes the point of the story clear and draws a conclusion

The coda - which signals to the listener that the story has ended
