TASK

Choose either the Menu Task or the Little Red Riding Hood Task to do
The Menu Task

Choose one menu and write a 300 - 350 word commentary addressing the following question.

What are the language choices the writer of the menu has taken to communicate to his specific audience?

  • In your answer you must refer to the specific audience for the menu, its purposes and the genre of menu writing.
  • Your answer must quote from the menu as evidence
  • Your answer must comment on the intended effect on the audience.
Remember you cannot write about everything in this commentary. Choose one important thing to say about the audience, the purpose and the genre of menus.

The Little Red Riding Hood Task

Choose one of the genres of writing on the task sheet given out in class and write a 400 word recasting of the story printed on the handout. Then write up a 300 word commentary on your recast text.

The terms we used today in class were:

Personification - bestowing human characteristics to inanimate objects
Imagery - language that creates strong visual images in the mind of a reader
Phonology - sound patterning usually found in poetry
Premodifying adjective - an adjective placed before a noun
Post modifying adjective - an adjective placed after the noun
Alliteration - the quick repetition of the sound of the opening syllable of a series of words
High frequency lexis - words that are commonly used
Low frequency lexis - words that are rarely used in every day speech
Polysyllabic words - words of more than one syllable - but usually three or four syllables
