A LITERARY PARAGRAPH
Your paragraphs have to include sections I – 3 and must include section 4,5 & 6 to enable you to gain marks.
When you also include 7 - 10 you will be making a strong paragraph. You will increase your marks further. In an essay you should aim to make at least one point from each of 7 – 10. A 1000 word essay must include at least one statement each from 7 - 10

1 Make a point

Write one simple and straightforward point relevant to your overall topic

2 Introduce quote / Expand on point
|
Either, introduce the quotation you are just about to use. One way to do this is by referring to the immediate context of the quote.

3 Evidence

Quote no more than a word or phrase. Be very selective. Choose quotations that you can write a lot about.

4 General point
|
Show how the quotation addresses the point made at the opening of the paragraph

5 Literary points
|
Comment on a literary feature or features expressed through the quotation. This can include denotations, connotations, imagery - metaphor, simile, personification, symbolism, rhetorical devises - contrasting pairs, lists of three, direct address, phonology - alliteration, assonance, rhyme, rhythm, onomatopoeia,

6 Effect on reader
|
Comment on the effect the poetic techniques used in the quotation have on you / us as readers of the poem. WE may feel pleasure, shock, sympathy, frustrated, anger, hate, love

7 Context point
|
Make a statement that will link the quotation to a historical, social, or political point
|
8 Attitudes and values
|
Identify the underpinning attitudes and values communicated by the quotation.

9 Comparative point
|
Make a statement that links to another poem you have studied for this part of the course. Show how the two poems are either different or similar. Quote from the comparing poem to show this.

10 Other voices
|
Make a relevant statement showing how society or the literary establishment perceives the writer’s work.
