IB ENGLISH HOMEWORK - PARAGRAPHS

IB ENGLISH YR 1
AN ENCOUNTER HOMEWORK

TASK
DUE IN Friday 12 OCTOBER
Write three paragraphs on three different features of the short story An Encounter.
Here are some suggested topics to write on; paralysis, the significance of the setting, the narrative voice or play.
Each paragraph should be between 70 – 100 words. But don’t worry if it’s a bit over – 130.
Each paragraph should be structured in the following way
STRUCTURE
DETAIL
EXAMPLE
Make a point
The point must be clear, straightforward and simple.
Joe Dillon is presented as a violent and frightening character.
Expand in more detail
Develop your ideas further in a more detailed statement.
This is one way Joyce presents play as violent.
Introduce quotation
Identify where in the text the quotation comes from. And where relevant describe the action taking place.
In the first paragraph of the short story the narrator says about Joe Dillon
Quotation
Usually the quotation should be no more than a word or a phrase. But as you can see I’ve failed here.
‘he played to fiercely for us who were younger and more timid.’
General point
Summarise the point. Show how the quotation supports the point made.
There is a strong contrast between Dillon and the other boys. Dillon is violent while the narrator and his friends are victims.
Literary point
Make a number of observations about the features of language used in the quotation.
This is presented through the adverb ‘ fiercely’ – connotes the noun fire, with the premodifiers used to describe the boys, ‘younger’ – a comparative adjective and the onomatopoeic ‘timid’.
Effect
Comment in general on the effect one or more of the language features have on a general reader.
The effect on a reader is to feel sympathetic to the narrator and his friends.
