A CLASS PARAGRAPH ON POWER in Spies
Despite Stephen being poweless for much of the
novel, there are moments where he is able to express his power. At the
confrontation between Mr Hayward and Stephen over the basket in Chapter 9,
Stephen briefly challenges Mr Hayward’s all powerful presence. He forces Mr Hayward to say “please”. This is
very characteristic of Mr Haywards speech as it’s minimal and typical or Mr
Hayward’s short clipped language. The adverb presents him as desperate. He can
no longer demand for something he has to ask for it, which shows the complete
shift of power from Mr Hayward to Stephen. The fact that it is italisised
emphasises it’s significance and importance. It makes the reader feel even more angry towards
Mr Hayward, and we feel no sympathy for Mr Hayward as he is potrayed as a very
pathetic figure at this point.
