A2 ENGLISH LITERATURE - POETRY AND DRAMA FROM 1800 - A COMPARATIVE PARAGRAPH

Here is a worked comparative analytical paragraph that we have discussed in class.

Both Sheridan and Blake present power in their writing. However both present power in very different ways. One major contrast between the two writers comes as Sheridan focuses on the power relationship between parents and their children. It is a domestic power. While Blake is concerned with the power relationships that exists within society as a whole. Sir Anthony says to Jack, 'The fortune is saddled with a wife,' The metaphorical verb 'saddled' emphasises the restraint imposed upon Jack by his father. Here the conflict is used to create humour. It's entertaining. In stark contrast Blake writes in a more allegorical manner about the authority of the church over citizens. He writes in The Garden of Love, 'Priests...binding with briers my joys and desires.' Blake's concern is with the freedom and the rights of a citizen. Their joy and desire is not dependent on material wealth but on the teaching of the church. Blake was highly critical of the church that defended the interests of the privileged elite at the expense of the ordinary masses. For Blake his poetry is produced to promote social change.
