Identify a minimum of five key episodes from Spies.
Write down the page references and the opening and closing words in the extract.
Give a title for each extract
Then choose at least one paragraph from each key episode and annotate it fully using the linguistic and literary frameworks referred to in the feedback for the analysis style question.
Then I want you to write five analytical paragraphs. Use the template below to help you do this.
- Write a topic sentence. For this exercise you could use this wording. 'In this paragraph Frayn....
- Support your main point with evidence. this will be a brief quotation from the extract.
- Then you should write two or three comments showing how the quotation supports the point you made in the topic sentence. These comments must include language and literary features. Use the must know list mentioned above or any other language features you feel confident using. Don't forget to comment on the effects of these language features on a reader.
In the paragraph that begins, 'I creep forward again' Frayn creates a powerfully vivid description of Stephen's lonely midnight walk. For example he writes 'By touch I find the harsh brickwork of the retaining wall.' The verb 'touch' is used to emphasise that Stephen is walking in darkness and cannot see. It is used to create tension and Stephen's vulnerability and bravery. And the pre modifier 'harsh' is used to create a vivid and detailed sense of place. It adds top the sensory descriptive evokation of place.
