AS ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE
ELLA 1 INTEGRATED ANALYSIS AND TEXT PRODUCTION
INTEGRATED ANALYSIS PRAGRAPHS – SPIES

TASK 1

Using the extracts below, write an analytical paragraph, that could be included in an essay on the role of women in Spies. The paragraph you are writing asserts the point that Barbara [and Deidre] knows more about the lives of the people in The Close than Stephen or Keith. Especially Keith’s aunt.

In your paragraph you should include;
  • A topic sentence
  • Introduce quotation – briefly
  • Quote
  • Comments should include 2 language features - one of these should be literary, the effect of these on a reader and a reference to the narrative view point.
This extract comes from page 101

“’Or perhaps ‘she says softly, ‘she’s taking a message to Mrs Tracey’s boyfriend’.
Now I do turn to look at her, too uncomprehending to conceal it. Auntie Dee’s boyfriend? What’s she talking about? How can someone’s aunt have a boyfriend?

Didn’t you know?’ whispers Barbara. ‘Deidre’s seen her kissing him. In the blackout. She went up to the tunnel with you brother and there they were.’”

TASK 2

Using the extract below write up a second analytical paragraph in response to the above question.

This extract comes from page 178

“’ I know how terrible it is to have to ask you, Stephen. I shouldn’t do it if there were any other way.
 I feel so…

The words stop. I look up to see what’s happened. Her hands are pressed to her mouth, and her eyes are filling with tears. Two almost inaudible words finally escape through her fingers; ‘So ashamed.’”

TASK 3

Swap paragraphs with the person sitting next to you and write a mark and a comment on them
